Since it started at the Anderson family kitchen table, Ellon-headquartered Phil Anderson Financial Services Ltd. has built a team of 20 across the north-east. Owner Phil tells Ellon Life about what he does, where his desire to succeed comes from and why he loves our modern market town…

“With a family of six boys, working hard and providing financial security for my family is so important. When Evan was born with Down’s Syndrome, I was even more motivated because I wanted to make his life easier.

I was made redundant from my financial advisor role during the 2009 credit crunch and spotted a gap in the market. Most financial advisors seemed to be happy dealing with existing clients – there didn’t seem to be anyone looking to take on new clients and really grow a business. It was my big chance.

I was excited to make money matters simple, straightforward and affordable for as many people as I could. We help people buy property by giving them mortgage advice and support them with retirement planning by advising on pensions, investments and savings.

The business has grown so much over the last 10 years. It moved from my kitchen table to a nice, visible spot in the centre of Ellon and there’s a team of twenty. We’re so grateful to the people of Ellon for putting their trust in us with their hard-earned savings and investments.

I’ve gone from being a hands-on financial advisor to a business owner. I work on growing the business, managing the team and helping with training.

Go for it! Learn from your mistakes and get good people around you. I’d also recommend working with a business coach.

What are your business highlights?
Winning a Northern Star Award and a Pride of Aberdeen Award are up there, and I was truly delighted when we achieved over £1 million turnover. But I’d have to say the real highlight is how much we’ve grown over the past year, despite the challenges of a global pandemic.
